Magnum and Magnum XL is a brand of condoms made by an American company called Trojan and very popular in the USA. They make high quality condoms used by millions of people every year.
We often get asked
"are Magnum and Magnum XL condom sizes genuinely bigger condoms in comparison to regular sized condoms?"
The Trojan condom describes Magnum and Magnum XL condom sizes as:
"..larger than standard latex condoms for extra comfort.."
so you would certainly expect them to be bigger condoms. And for the Magnum XL, XL stands for "extra large", right?
So how much larger are Magnum and Magnum XL condom sizes exactly?
Well, according to the contraception.about.com's condom size chart, Magnum and Magnum XL condoms have a nominal width of 54mm. But in comparison, according to the same website, a regular Durex condom (which isn't advertised as being large, or small) has a nominal width of 56mm.
So, Magnum and Magnum XL nominal width condom sizes are actually 2mm smaller when compared to a regular Durex condom?
And length wise, most standard condoms are already 205mm long (8.1") - the same length as Magnum and Magnum XL condoms.
So are Magnum and Magnum XL condoms genuinely large condoms? Well, here's what the VP of marketing at Trojan said about the subject in 2010:
"(the Magnum condom) is the same length as standard condoms, with the same circumference at its base"
“Some people feel more comfortable with that width, but you don’t have to be an overly endowed man to use a Magnum and enjoy it”
And here’s what Psychology Today said about the same Magnum myth:
“The copy tries to upsell the Trojan customer to Magnum, and the Magnum customer to XL. It's easy to see why men fall for this particular sales pitch. It's also easy to see why Trojan loves Magnums. A box of 12 regular Trojans retails for around $5.99; a box of 12 Magnums or Magnum XLs is $7.99. That's a 33 percent premium. Then there's Magnum Ecstasy, at $10.99 for a box that contains only 10. I doubt that anyone buying a product called "Magnum Ecstasy" does the math, but that's over twice the unit price of the regular Trojans. Were these gloves instead of love gloves, "small," "medium," and "large" would retail for the same price. So the Magnum premium is pure profit.”
In comparison to Magnum and Magnum XL condoms, the largest TheyFit condom has a nominal width of 69mm - some 28% LARGER than a Magnum or Magnum XL condom. And our longest condom is 240mm long (9.4") - 17% LONGER than a Magnum or Magnum XL condom.
Why? Because we believe that a better fit, means better sex.
